FAQ guest taxe Baselland / Guest Pass+

Who is liable to pay guest tax?
In principle, all persons staying overnight in commercial accommodation establishments in the canton of Basel-Landschaft.

Who is exempt from the guest tax?
Persons resident in the canton of Basel-Landschaft, children under the age of 12, spa guests with a medical prescription, members of the army, civil defense and fire department when accommodated on official business and persons who are accommodated in the same accommodation for more than 30 days in total per calendar year.

How long is a guest liable to pay tax?

Persons who are accommodated in the same accommodation for a total of more than 30 days per calendar year are no longer charged tax from the 31st day. Once the obligation to pay guest tax ceases from the 31st day of stay, the entitlement to the Guest Pass+ also ceases. As soon as a person moves their place of residence to the canton of Baselland (registration with the municipality), they are exempt from the guest tax. A person who is not officially registered is considered a tourist and is therefore also subject to the guest tax until the 30th day per calendar year

Do children under the age of 12 (= not liable to pay tax) receive the Guest Pass+?

Children accompanied by family members who are liable to pay guest tax receive the Guest Pass+ free of charge as a gesture of goodwill. Children under the age of 12 are not taxed in group accommodation (camps, etc.) and therefore do not receive a Guest Pass+.

Do people resident in the canton of Baselland also receive the Guest Pass+ when they stay overnight?
No, the Guest Pass+ is only issued to persons who are liable to pay tax. There is no possibility for persons resident in the canton of Baselland to voluntarily pay a tax in order to benefit from the Guest Pass+.

How long is the Guest Pass+ valid for?
The Guest Pass+ is valid for the duration of the stay, including arrival and departure days, up to a maximum of 30 days per calendar year.

Can guests use public transport free of charge for their arrival?

Yes, the accommodation can send the Guest Pass+ to the guest in advance by email. Guests can either print out the Guest Pass+ (print@home) or download it as a wallet solution for their smartphone.

Do I have to buy an additional ticket for my dog?

Yes, a separate ticket must be purchased for the dog. The Guest Pass+ is not valid for the dog.

I would like to transport my bicycle/e-bike on public transport. Do I need an extra ticket?

Yes, an additional ticket must be purchased for the bicycle/e-bike. You can find more information HERE.

What happens in the event of changes/cancellations?

Cancellations automatically invalidate the Guest Pass+. For rebookings, the guest must make a new printout or download.

I have booked my accommodation via Airbnb. Do I also receive a Guest Pass+?

Yes, guests in Airbnbs in the canton of Basel-Landschaft also receive the Guest Pass+. Please contact your host directly.
